第一章

孟子曰：穷则独善其身，达则兼善天下。中道而行，庶几乎兼俱。子曰：“居上不宽，为下不厚，临死不忘。既清矣哉！方技、既成，断矣哉！”

Mengzi said: When one is poor, he should focus on selfimprovement; when one is prosperous, he should benefit the world. By following the middle path, one can achieve both. Confucius said: "When in a position of authority, do not be arrogant; when below, do not be resentful. Face death without forgetting righteousness. This is truly noble! Once a skill is perfected, do not waiver!"

第二章

子曰：“温故而知新，可以为师矣。”

Confucius said: "By reviewing the old, one can understand the new, and thus become a teacher."

第三章

子曰：“不愤不启，不悱不发。举一隅不以三隅反，是惟圣人能之行也。”

Confucius said: "Do not be agitated without reason, do not speak without thinking. To see one side and not consider the other is the behavior of the wise and virtuous."

第四章

子曰：“由，诲汝知之乎！”子路曰：“敢问其由？”子曰：“天也，始也。民有信，焉可以立之。”

Confucius said: "You, Zilu, I will instruct you. Zilu asked, 'May I ask where to begin?' Confucius replied: 'Heaven produces all things; this is where we should start. Once the people have faith, they can be established."

子曰：“见贤思齐焉，见不贤而内自省也。”

Confucius said: "When you see virtuous people, think of becoming like them. When you see people lacking virtue, reflect on your own behavior."

第六章

子曰：“爱之，能勿劳乎？忠焉，能勿诲乎？”

Confucius said: "If you love someone, can you refrain from imposing upon them? If you are loyal, can you refrain from instructing them?"

第七章

子曰：“爱人者，人恒爱之；敬人者，人恒敬之。”

Confucius said: "Those who love others will be loved in return; those who respect others will be respected."

子夏曰：“贱而无骄，贵而无骄，是以托付焉。”

Zixia said: "Be humble in lowly positions and be modest in high positions. Thus, you will gain the trust of others."

Confucius said: "Do not worry about lacking status; worry about the way to establish yourself. Do not worry about being unknown; seek to be worthy of recognition."

第十章

子曰：“质胜文则野，文胜质则史。文质彬彬，然后君子。”

Confucius said: "If substance surpasses form, one will be like a rustic person; if form surpasses substance, one will be like a scribe. When both form and substance are refined, then one becomes a true gentleman."
