子曰：“巧言令色，足恭，左丘明耻之，丘亦耻之。匿怨而友其人，左丘明耻之，丘亦耻之。”

Master said: "Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue. Left Ch'iu is ashamed of them. I also am ashamed of them. To conceal resentment against a person and appear friendly with him, Left Ch'iu is ashamed of such conduct. I also am ashamed of it."

子曰：“吾十有五而志于学，三十而立，四十而不惑，五十而知天命，六十而耳顺，七十而从心所欲，不逾矩。”

Master said: "At fifteen, I had my mind bent on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I had no doubts. At fifty, I knew the decrees of Heaven. At sixty, my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth. At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired, without transgressing what was right."

子曰：“不患人之不己知，患不知人也。”

Master said: "I will not be afflicted at men's not knowing me; I will be afflicted that I do not know men."
