孝与弟，为仁之始也，所以立身修德，教化人伦也。孝者，顺天伦之义；弟者，顺地伦之义。孝者，爱亲恭敬；弟者，友朋敬长。二者不可偏废。孝弟之行，天下之始也，何以明之？仁者，先以己为敬，故能以明天下之敬。故曰，敬之至也者，以孝弟为本。
Translation:
Filial piety and fraternal respect are the beginning of benevolence, the foundation of selfcultivation and the education of human relationships. Filial piety means to adhere to the principles of family ethics and respect the bonds between parents and children; fraternal respect means to follow the principles of social ethics and respect the hierarchy of elders and juniors. Both are equally important and cannot be neglected. The practice of filial piety and fraternal respect is the beginning of everything in the world. How to demonstrate this? A benevolent person first regards himself with respect, and therefore can show respect to others. Therefore, it is said that the ultimate respect is rooted in filial piety and fraternal respect.
