《大学》中的五则翻译

第一则:大学之道

大学之道,在明明德,在亲民,在止于至善。知止而后有定,定而后能静,静而后能安,安而后能虑,虑而后能得。物有本末,事有终始,知所自来,知所去者,可以为之君矣。

Translation:

The path of the Great Learning is to manifest bright virtue, to love people, and to stop at the ultimate good. To understand restraint is the first step to stability, stability is the key to tranquility, tranquility leads to peace, and from peace comes careful deliberation. Deliberation then leads to attainment. Things have their roots and their branches, affairs have their ends and their beginnings. to know what precedes and what follows, is near to or far from us, is the mark of a great ruler.

第二则:格物致知

子曰:“温故而知新,可以为师矣。”

Translation:

Confucius said, "If you review the old and learn the new, you may be a teacher."

第三则:诚实

子曰:“诚之为人也,宽恕以禮,敏而不怒,搏而能复,久而能言。”

Translation:

Confucius said, "To be true to oneself, to be forgiving and respectful, to be quick but not in a temper, to be resolute but not stubborn, to be strong but not rude, these are the virtues of a person."

第四则:学而时习之

子曰:“学而时习之,不亦说乎?有朋自远方来,不亦乐乎?人不知而不愠,不亦君子乎?”

Translation:

Confucius said, "Isn't it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned? Isn't it also a pleasure to have friends coming from afar? If people do not recognize me, and yet I do not get upset, does this not make me a refined person?"

第五则:知之为知之,不知为不知

子曰:“君子不器。”

Translation:

Confucius said, "A refined person is not a utensil."
