Bao Zheng, with the courtesy name Xiren, was a famous official and legalist in the Northern Song dynasty. He was born in Shaan Prefecture, Henan Province during the Qingli era of Emperor Taizu of Song. Due to his family's poverty, he worked in agriculture in his early years. Later, Bao was admitted to the Imperial Academy in the capital and became a jinshi, or successful candidate in the imperial examinations. He served as a minister in the Ministry of Personnel, the Ministry of Justice, and as a magistrate of Kaifeng. In these posts, Bao Zheng showed outstanding talents and qualities, earning the trust and affection of the emperor at that time. He was a conscientious and honest official throughout his life, emphasizing legal justice and seeking benefits for the people. He was later honored as a "clean official" by later generations.
